Color Musically Yours. Love, Todd.

by Mira Friedlaender, Stephanie Hunt and Keith Waters

Color Musically Yours. Love, Todd., works with the viewer to create music. The viewer is invited to draw with color on paper which Todd then scans. Todd converts the data from the drawings into music. Todd does this by sensing how much light is reflected off the paper. Each color reflects different amounts of light so Todd can convert the color-value into musical form.

Todd is embodied in three connected wall-mounted units. When a viewer/paticipant approaches Todd, it kindly stops scanning/playing to allow the viewer/paticipant to draw using provided markers. Todd then resumes scanning interprets the new marks and colors.

Todd robot is able to create complex musical arrangements according to the artistic input of the viewer. The end result is a colorful "score," which is a collaboration between the viewer and the robotic instrument/performer.

Mira Friedlaender, Stephanie Hunt and Keith Waters are artists.
