Outerspace

Andre Stubbe & Markus Lerner
Fibre glass pipes, MDF, servo motors, BX-24 microcontrollers, laptop, special Java sofware.
(2004)

Outerspace is a reactive robotic creature. Its motivation is based on curiosity, the desire to explore the surrounding space looking for contact. Touch it, play with it and watch its behaviour. The project is at the edge of art and design involving various aspects of industrial design, physical computing & artificial intelligence. It was developed on the brief "Lustobjekt", object of pleasure & desire, in the "Digital Media Class" at Berlin University of the Arts 2004. It was supervised by Prof. Joachim Sauter, Prof. Frank Fietzek, Karl Heinz Jeron & Ralph Ammer.

Markus' work ranges between generative art, computational design and artificial intelligence. Wether on screen or in the physical world he attaches great value to technology and aesthetics to the same extent. Markus currently studies Graphic & Media Design at London College of Communication (Interactive Course) and will soon return to Berlin University of the Arts to finish his Diploma in the Digital Media Class of Prof. Joachim Sauter.
Andre's work encompasses a smooth interplay between graphic design and illustration skills together with computational design and artificial intelligence. An atmosphere, character or feeling is created through the combination of aesthetics and computation. A central aspect of his work is also the engagement of the user through reactive graphics, game-like behaviours and virtual characters. Andre currently studies Visual Communication for Diploma at Berlin University of the Arts in the Digital Media Class of Prof. Joachim Sauter.
